For a moment, I can't remember where I am. Then it all comes crashing back: every last miserable moment of the events that have led to me landing at Divinity Ranch. I stretch and yawn and kick back my comforter, pushing aside a needlepoint pillow inscribed with “Put Your Trust In Jesus.” Fortunately, I was dead tired last night when I went to bed and did not have the energy to lament the fact that the room held none of the modern forms of entertainment I'd grown used to. There was no TV, laptop, tablet, smartphone, or diversional reading material, other than a bible and, surprisingly, a few Christian romance novels. I sit up and rub my eyes. There is a knock on the door.

"Who is it?" I call out.

The door eases open to reveal one of the maids poking her face in through the crack she has made. "It's time to get up, Miss Alice," she says in a low voice. "Breakfast will be served in half an hour."

"Okay."

Quietly, she shuts the door, leaving me to myself. I pad over to my private bathroom and stare at the work before me in the mirror. I have not had my magic for grooming in the past few weeks, and my hair is a snarled, frizzy mess. My brows are thick with new growth, single hairs curling up and out. I pluck them ruthlessly, the sting making my eyes water. Next, I attack my hair, but have no idea what to do with it. I know that girls with curly hair have all sorts of creams and potions that they use, but I’ve never bothered because I’ve had my magic. I wet it down and search the cabinet, finding a small bottle of conditioner, which I run through the wet strands until I have tamed it into submission. I then pull it back in a ponytail of slick, glistening, shiny waves.

“Good,” I say to my reflection and give myself a quick sponge bath, realizing I should have showered first before bothering with my hair. When done, I find a jumpsuit amidst my brand new wardrobe that Montana whipped up and get dressed.
